More than 500 RSVP’d for first Kids Tag Art Pinellas Awards Ceremony tomorrow at the Capitol Theatre

Elementary school students will be honored for their artistic abilities

CLEARWATER, FLORIDA, JANUARY 20, 2016 – Diane Nelson, Pinellas County Tax Collector, is pleased to announce that 114 Pinellas County Schools elementary art students will be honored at the first annual Kids Tag Art Pinellas Awards Ceremony tomorrow Thursday, January 21, 2016 at the Capitol Theatre, 405 Cleveland Street, in downtown Clearwater at 6 p.m.

Elementary art students in 37 Pinellas County Schools created their own unique vanity tags that anyone can purchase online for $15 + $2.50 shipping and handling for the front of their vehicles. Three winners from each school were chosen by a panel of judges and will be honored tomorrow night at the Capitol Theatre. All of the unique vanity plates are on sale through Friday, February 5, 2016, at kidstagartpinellas.org.

All funds raised from sponsorships and tag sales directly support arts education in Pinellas County. One dollar from the sale of each tag benefits the St. Petersburg College Foundation’s “I AM 4 ART, U CAN B 2” Scholarship Fund. Remaining proceeds from tag sales and community sponsorships are given to the Pinellas County Schools Visual Arts Department to be used exclusively as supplement funding for art enrichment programs and supplies for participating schools. To date, $55,000 cash and $10,000 in-kind donations have been received from community partners.

Kids Tag Art Pinellas is a community partnership program that brings businesses, students, families, government, and the public school system together to increase awareness about the importance of arts in our community. It is an elementary art curriculum that teaches children how art is used in commerce while raising needed funds to support arts education throughout Pinellas County.

“It is imperative that Pinellas County students have the opportunity to not only think creatively but also strategically,” said Pinellas County Tax Collector Diane Nelson. “Kids Tag Art provides the opportunity for students to expand their horizons and learn about the economic benefits of arts in Pinellas and throughout the world.”

“Art education helps Pinellas County Schools students become more confident and more understanding of the world around them. Kids Tag Art Pinellas will help to foster the creativity of our students, while enabling the school district to provide more resources for our art education programs in classrooms,” said Michael A. Grego, Ed.D., Pinellas County Schools Superintendent.
