Tax Collector Partnership Provides Tools to help Pinellas Car Buyers Avoid Fraud

CLEARWATER, FL – Before you buy a used car, there’s an easy way to learn the vehicle’s history to avoid buying a hurricane-damaged lemon.

Pinellas County Tax Collector Charles W. Thomas is pleased to announce that the Florida Tax Collector Association’s Service Corporation is partnering with Auto Data Direct to provide low-cost vehicle history reports at National Motor Vehicle Title Information System (NMVTIS) reports are part of a U.S. Department of Justice program designed to protect buyers from fraud, unsafe vehicles, and to keep stolen vehicles from being resold.

NMVTIS reports give potential buyers information on the vehicle’s title history, most recent odometer reading, and brand history. A brand is a descriptive label that states assign to vehicles to identify the vehicle’s current or prior condition, such as “junk,” “salvage,” “flood,” or “prior taxi.” NMVTIS reports can also protect buyers from VIN cloning, a common practice where car thieves copy a legitimate vehicle’s Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) to a stolen car.

“This partnership provides an excellent tool to ensure our drivers are protected from vehicle related fraud,” said Thomas. “We encourage Pinellas County drivers to take advantage of these reports as part of their next car buying decision.”

NMVTIS reports can be purchased for $5.95 each at For more information about the Pinellas County Tax Collector’s Office, please visit and follow us at
