Pinellas County Tax Collector’s office is collaborating with AT&T to educate residents about the dangers of distracted driving

This Wednesday, AT&T’s virtual reality simulator will give residents a true view of the dangers of texting while driving

CLEARWATER, FLORIDA, JUNE 6, 2016 – AT&T research shows that 7-in-10 people engage in smartphone activities while driving. Did you know that the minimal amount of time you are distracted when you text while driving is five seconds? If you’re traveling at 55 mph, that equals driving the length of a football field without looking at the road.

To educate residents about the dangers of distracted driving, the Pinellas County Tax Collector’s office is collaborating with AT&T to bring the message of the company’s “It Can Wait” campaign to drivers in Pinellas. This Wednesday, June 8, AT&T is bringing a virtual reality simulator to the Pinellas County Tax Collector’s Mid-County Office in Largo. Drivers will be able to experience firsthand how dangerous it is to take their eyes off the road.

“It is imperative that we teach all generations that texting and driving don’t mix,” said Diane Nelson, Pinellas County Tax Collector. “As Pinellas County’s only source for driver license issuance, I feel a responsibility to educate drivers about the dangers of distracted driving.”

Over the next couple of weeks, “Selfie Stations” will be installed in all six Pinellas County Tax Collector branch offices. Drivers will be encouraged to post a selfie of themselves on their social media accounts after pledging to end distracted driving. Each driver will receive a pledge form when checking in at the front desk.

The Tax Collector’s office is sharing AT&T’s “It Can Wait” message with drivers as the school year ends and more teen drivers will be on the roads heading to the beach, pools, and on summer road trips.
