Revised Website Wins Award for Tax Collector

“I’m very proud that we were able to do this in-house with Tax Collector employees,” says Pinellas County Tax Collector Diane Nelson.
COURTHOUSE CLEARWATER: Pinellas County Tax Collector Diane Nelson received a Florida Government Communicators Association (FGCA) award at their December Annual Conference in St. Petersburg, Florida, for professional achievement in Technology Services by revising her Internet website for faster downloads and compliance with American Disability Act (ADA) Standards. The First Place “Crystal” Award in the category went to the Southwest Florida Water Management District (SWFMD), Second Place to Pinellas, and Third Place to Volusia County Government.
Since 1989 the FGCA, www.fgca.org, has dedicated itself to improving the flow of information from its members’ government agencies to the public, and it is the premier public communicator group in the State of Florida. Nineteen guest judges from Indiana, Kentucky, North Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, and Maryland, all outside Florida, reviewed 138 entries in 14 categories in this year’s juried competition.

The Tax Collector website revision project took into consideration Non-Windows browsers, disabled users, modem users, and future versions of browsers and other platforms, such as cell phones.
The key decision for the Tax Collector was to use in-house staff. Pinellas Tax Collector’s Information Technology Department set goals of faster downloads, improved navigation, auto-centering within browser windows and others. The cost of revising www.taxcollect.com was handled by salaried personnel (not hourly employees) and did not add to any department’s budget or deprive any other project of necessary staff.
