Tax Collector wants to help motorists save money
Florida motor vehicle registration costs may be lowered by up to $25 annually
CLEARWATER, FL, MARCH 12, 2014 – Diane Nelson, Tax Collector, is looking out for Pinellas County residents. The Florida Legislature is currently reviewing a bill that may lower the cost of motor vehicle registrations by up to $25.00 per year. In a proactive effort, Ms. Nelson is removing the two-year renewal option from motor vehicle renewal notices. She stated, “If this bill passes, I want to give Pinellas County residents the opportunity to take advantage of the savings it will offer. I would be disheartened if someone missed out on the opportunity to save money because they were not informed of the pending legislation and potential savings.” If approved, this legislative change is scheduled to take effect September 1, 2014.
In 2013, nine percent of Pinellas County residents took advantage of the biennial registration. If this bill passes with a conservative estimate of $12.50 in annual savings per registration, Pinellas County residents would save approximately $500,000.00 by holding off on biennial renewals until the new rates are established.
Residents will still have the option to renew their registrations for two years. They simply need to write “two year renewal” and double the amount to be paid on their registration renewal return card. There is no cost advantage with two-year registration renewals, they are offered as a matter of convenience.
