PINELLAS COUNTY, FL — Sharks, mermaids, and t-rexes, oh my.
Those are just a few of the front license plate designs over 2,700 Pinellas County fifth graders created during art class. Now, these designs are on sale, and purchasing one of these metal plates benefits the young artist’s school.
It’s all part of Kids Tag Art Pinellas, a partnership between the Pinellas County Tax Collector’s Office, Pinellas County Schools, and various community sponsors to raise money for elementary art education, including classroom art supplies and field trips. To date, Kids Tag Art Pinellas has raised over $100,000 for elementary art programs and Fine Arts scholarships at St. Petersburg College.
This year, a record 52 schools are participating in the program. Curlew Creek Elementary and Sawgrass Lake Elementary piloted digital artwork, with students using iPads to create their designs. And for the first time in the program’s history, art teachers submitted their own designs for sale.

Tags cost $15 apiece and can be purchased online at www.kidstagartpinellas.org. The deadline to buy a tag in time for holiday delivery is Friday, November 30. Sales will continue through the end of January 2019. Plates can be searched by student first name, R2D2 number, or school name. Teacher designs can be found by entering the search term “teacher.”
“Kids Tag Art Pinellas is our creative solution to help schools provide quality fine arts education,” said Pinellas County Tax Collector Charles W. Thomas. “It’s our goal to bridge the funding gap and help these teachers do what they do best – inspire the imagination.”
In addition to funding arts education, Kids Tag Art Pinellas is also a juried art competition. Retired Pinellas County art teachers select winning artists from each school. Winning artists are invited to an awards ceremony in January 2019, where they will be recognized for their talent.
Kids Tag Art is made possible by generous community sponsors, including Platinum Sponsor Bay Star Restaurant Group, Sunshine State Tag Agency, Tag Agency of Pinellas, Dex Imaging, Direct Mail Systems, Bill 2 Pay, the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office, Freedom Boat Club and Lauren’s Kids. If you are interested in becoming a sponsor, visit www.kidstagartpinellas.org.
