REAL ID Update
Florida residents: you do not need to rush to upgrade your Florida driver license or identification card to a REAL ID.
As a REAL ID compliant state, Floridians have until October 1, 2021 until REAL ID requirements go into effect.
Starting October 1, 2021, all U.S. adults — including Floridians — will need to present a REAL ID-compliant license or another acceptable form of identification for domestic air travel. The deadline is sooner for residents of states that are either not REAL ID compliant or do not have an extension from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
As of December 2017, 84% of Florida driver licenses and identification cards are REAL ID compliant. Not sure if your ID is REAL ID compliant? If you have a gold star on your driver license or identification card, you’re good to go.
If your ID is not REAL ID compliant, you must visit a Tax Collector’s office in person to obtain a REAL ID. You cannot upgrade to a REAL ID online. If your driver license is valid and unexpired, it will remain valid for driving purposes until the expiration date. Click here for a checklist of required documents to obtain a REAL ID.
